How to Choose a Reiki Practitioner: What You Should Know Before Booking

Six things to consider when choosing the right practitioner for you
People come to Reiki for all kinds of reasons. For some, it’s stress or exhaustion. Others feel stuck, heavy, or uncertain about where life is taking them. Often, they’re looking to feel lighter, gain a fresh perspective, and find support as they move forward.
If that sounds familiar, the person you choose to work with matters. You may be wondering: How much does experience count? What happens in a session? How can I tell whether a practitioner is right for me?
I’m a Reiki Master and intuitive healer with more than ten years of experience in energy healing. My approach combines a practical foundation with intuitive and spiritual insight.
Here are six things I’d encourage you to consider before booking—whether you choose to work with me or someone else.
#1 Understand what kind of session the practitioner offers
Reiki practitioners don’t all work in the same way. Some offer a traditional Reiki session focused on the energy work itself. Others incorporate conversation or additional modalities. Neither approach is automatically better; the question is what you’re hoping to receive.
Reiki is an important part of my healing practice, but my approach goes beyond the modality itself. I combine energy healing with grounded, thoughtful conversation and the spiritual insight I receive through my intuitive work. I take time to understand what you’re experiencing, the challenges you’re navigating, and what matters most to you. My intention is to offer a space where you feel genuinely supported, while bringing forward insights and perspectives that may help you find greater clarity, hope, and direction.
If you’re comparing practitioners, ask what their sessions include. The answer will tell you far more than a service name alone.
#2 Consider experience, training, and the person as a whole
Experience can bring depth to a practitioner’s work, but a newer Reiki practitioner can also offer a caring, thoughtful experience. To me, compassion, integrity, and the ability to connect with clients are just as important.
After all, a healing session is a personal experience, and feeling comfortable with the person you’re working with matters. That’s why I’d encourage you to look beyond the number of years someone has been practicing and consider their training, ongoing development, and overall approach. Do they communicate clearly? Do they take time to listen? Do you feel genuinely heard and supported?
My background in nursing, health education, and project management has shaped the grounded, practical way I approach my work. My own healing journey, including experiences of personal and childhood trauma, has deepened my compassion and understanding for others navigating challenging times. Alongside this foundation, my work as a psychic medium brings an intuitive and spiritual dimension to my healing practice.
I don’t see my practical experience and intuitive abilities as separate. Both are integral to my work, allowing me to remain grounded while drawing on spiritual insight and guidance.
#3 Ask what happens before and during a session
Especially if it’s your first experience with Reiki or intuitive healing, you should be able to ask questions and understand what to expect. Does the practitioner begin with a conversation? Can you share your concerns?
I’m always honoured when someone chooses me for their first intuitive healing experience. I meet them where they are, discuss what they’re going through, answer their questions, and establish an intention for our time together.
That initial conversation is an important part of my approach. It allows me to better understand what has brought you here, what you’re hoping to gain from the experience, and how I might best support you.

#4 The importance of trust and confidentiality
A healing session can be a very personal experience. You may be navigating challenges, seeking clarity, or simply looking for support. Whatever brings you to a session, you deserve to be met with compassion, respect, and understanding, without judgment or pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with.
Confidentiality is fundamental to my practice. I take seriously the trust clients place in me when sharing their personal experiences. Respecting their privacy, comfort, and personal boundaries is an essential part of how I work.
When choosing a practitioner, look for clear information about their fees, policies, and what you can expect during a session. You should also feel comfortable asking how confidentiality, consent, and personal boundaries are handled.
These are basic elements of a professional, respectful healing practice.
#5 Finding a practitioner who’s right for you
A high rating is encouraging, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you whether a practitioner is right for you. Pay closer attention to the experiences people describe. Do you notice consistent themes in their feedback? Does what they’re saying give you a sense of the practitioner’s approach and whether it might be a good fit for you?
I’d also ask friends or family whether they’ve worked with someone they would recommend. Spend time reading the practitioner’s website. If you still have questions, reach out and see whether a conversation is possible before you book.
You’re not trying to find someone with a perfect sales pitch. You’re looking for someone whose values, approach, and way of working feel aligned with yours.
#6 Finding clarity, hope, and a way forward
My approach combines Reiki with intuitive and spiritual insight, allowing me to explore aspects of a client’s experience that may not be immediately apparent. I share what comes forward with the intention of offering a different perspective, greater understanding, and possibilities they may not have previously considered.
“I want my clients to feel seen. I want them to feel loved. I want them to feel hope. I want them to feel as though I’ve walked with them.”
A final thought
Choosing a Reiki practitioner isn’t about finding the person with the longest list of certifications or the boldest promises. It’s about understanding what they offer, taking time to learn about their experience, and finding someone who treats you with care and respect.
I believe healing work can be both intuitive and grounded. This combination is central to my approach, along with integrity, confidentiality, and grace.
